Shingles

Shingles is a painful rash that is usually on one side of the face or body. Shingles symptoms include a rash that can cause blisters that usually scab after 7-10 days. Shingles is related to Chicken Pox, and is caused by the varicella zoster virus. The risk of getting Shingles increases as people age especially after age 60. Call a board certified dermatologist.

Is Shingles contagious?

Shingles is not contagious but it can be spread from some with an active case to someone who has never had Chicken Pox. The virus is spread by fluid from the blister to another but once the blister develops a crust it is no longer contagious. This should answer the question: “Are shingles contagious?”

Shingles treatment

Shingles can be effectively treated with antiviral medicines—acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir. However, to be most effective the medication must be applied at the beginning of the out break.

Razor bumps

It is an inflammatory reaction to the hair shaft entering the skin, most common in African American who shave regularly. Curved hair follicles and curly hair common among African American is a major contributor. Preventing of razor bumps Laser hair removal is the best method of removing unwanted hair in individuals affected with this condition. The laser device is programmed to selectively target the pigment in the hair follicle, destroying it, while leaving the skin intact. There is an increased risk of skin damage is individuals with darker skin types because of greater amounts of pigment in the skin. Electrical clippers are found by many to cause less bumps than razors. If one must shave it is important to avoid a close shave to help prevent razor bumps.

Below are some principles to avoid razor bumps

1. Brush hairs with polyester sponge before shaving 2. Wash beard, use pre-shave cream or gel 3. Use a sharp blade and rinse after each stroke 4. Avoid double and triple blade razors 5.
