Shingles

Shingles is a painful rash that is usually on one side of the face or body. Shingles symptoms include a rash that can cause blisters that usually scab after 7-10 days. Shingles is related to Chicken Pox, and is caused by the varicella zoster virus. The risk of getting Shingles increases as people age especially after age 60. Call a board certified dermatologist.

Is Shingles contagious?

Shingles is not contagious but it can be spread from some with an active case to someone who has never had Chicken Pox. The virus is spread by fluid from the blister to another but once the blister develops a crust it is no longer contagious. This should answer the question: “Are shingles contagious?”

Shingles symptoms

Shingles can have debilitating symptoms; Pain, numbness and burning on the skin Skin that is sensitive to the touch Red rash that appears after the pain appears Severe itching Blisters with fluid that break open and form a crust

Shingles treatment

Shingles can be effectively treated with antiviral medicines—acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir. However, to be most effective the medication must be applied at the beginning of the out break.

Shingles vaccine

To avoid contracting shingles, men and women over age 60 may consider a shingles vaccination. The CDC recommends and the FDA has approved shingles vaccine. Call a board certified dermatologist to get your Shingles vaccine. Shingles is sometimes called Zoster Herpes, it is NOT related to the same virus that causes genital herpes which is a sexually transmitted disease.

Juvederm

Juvederm is a family of injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers used to provide 9 months to one year of correction for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth). Juvederm is not indicated for use in lip augmentation. Juvederm products are a smooth consistency gel, compared to some hyaluronic gel products that have a granular consistency. Juvéderm injections usually result in some bruising and swelling, which can last up to two weeks. Bruising will eventually go away, but there are some things you can do to reduce it. Doctors offer these tip: For one to two weeks before your treatment, don’t use:
    • Alcohol
    • NSAID drugs (aspirin, Aleve, Advil, or Motrin)
    • Prescription blood thinner medicines
    • Vitamin E
    • Fish oil
    • The “G” herbs (ginkgo, garlic, and ginseng)
