Hives is also known as urticaria. It is a outbreak of swollen, patches of red bumps or welts on the skin. It can arise from allergies or other reasons. It is accompanied by itching, burning or stining sensation. Hives can appear on the lips, face, tongue, ears, throat or on the neck shoulders and back. Some areas of the body such as the face and limbs, are more prone to swelling than others. It’s due to this swelling that angioedema is sometimes referred to as “giant hives.”

When angioedema is hereditary in a family, the condition is known as hereditary angioedema. Hereditary angioedema has different causes, symptoms, treatments, and complications than regular angioedema.
Hives or swelling that lasts more than 6 weeks is called Chronic Urticaria. The cause is more difficult to determine because it may be more systemic; These symptoms are from hormonal imbalances: autoimmune, chronic infections, hormonal disorders and malignancy.
